]]>Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that Cameron Bancroft is in the lead to replace David Warner and Usman Khawaja in Australia’s Test batting lineup. Warner had earlier announced his decision to retire from Test cricket after the upcoming match against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
As Warner prepares to conclude his Test career, several openers are vying for his position in the Australian team. Ponting, noting Bancroft’s impressive domestic performance, considers him the top contender. Bancroft stood out during the 2022/23 summer in Australia’s Sheffield Shield competition, scoring four centuries and finishing as the leading run-scorer.
In the current season, Bancroft continued his excellent form, amassing 945 runs in 11 matches at an average of 59.06, including four centuries and a fifty. Throughout his first-class career, he has accumulated 9,389 runs with an average of 39.12, featuring 25 centuries and 33 fifties in 261 innings, with his best score being 228*.
However, Bancroft’s Test record shows 446 runs in 10 matches at an average of 26.23, with three fifties in 18 innings and a highest score of 82*. Despite not representing Australia since 2019, Ponting is optimistic that Bancroft’s current form will earn him another chance at the international level.
“If you look at those three guys, I think it is quite clear that Bancroft is the one that has got the runs on the board and I would not be surprised if they (selectors) go that way,” Ponting told Australian radio station SEN on Thursday as quoted by ICC.
“If you wind the clock back about six months it might have been a slightly different order than what it is now. I think they probably had Harris as the one that would come back in a while ago. To me now it sort of feels (there is) a bit more of a groundswell behind Cameron Bancroft getting first crack,” he added.
The cricket legend thinks Mitchell Marsh will likely be in Australia’s playing XI because of his outstanding performances in the Ashes series against England (250 runs in six innings, including a century and fifty) and the ICC Cricket World Cup in India (441 runs in 10 innings with two centuries and a fifty). On the other hand, the legend suggests that Cameron Green will have to be patient and wait for his next opportunity.
“I think Cameron Green might just have to sit back and bide his time and wait for the opportunity to come back,” Ponting said.
“He can get a truckload of runs in Shield cricket and sort of force his way back into the side. Labuschagne has been outstanding at No.3 for Australia, it is very much a specialist position,” he added.
Australia starts its series against Pakistan with the first Test in Perth on December 14, followed by matches in Melbourne and Sydney. After that, they’ll have a two-match series against the West Indies at home in January. Currently, Australia is in third place in the ICC World Test Championship standings, having drawn against arch-rival England in the recent Ashes series, where they retained the trophy.

]]>Well before the Cricket World Cup 2023 teams were finalized, discussions about the pitch dominated the tournament chatter. As the semi-finals approached, the focus shifted to the nature of the pitch for the knockout matches. The final between India and Australia in Ahmedabad saw the hosts grappling with the consequences of a slow and sluggish wicket, prompting cricket legends to call out what they deemed a ‘tactical blunder’ in pitch preparation.
Australia’s decision to field first, following Pat Cummins winning the toss, set the tone for the final. India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, expressed his preference for batting first but ultimately faced the consequences of Australia’s strategic pitch assessment. Ricky Ponting, commentating during the match, labeled India’s wicket preparation a “tactical blunder” that had backfired.
“It was very, very sub-continental conditions today,” Ponting commented. “A wicket preparation that has probably ended up backfiring on India to be totally fair.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan credited Australia’s clever tactics and the strategic mindset of their think tank. He emphasized that Australia, perceived as a 280-run team, seized the opportunity provided by the pitch. Vaughan highlighted the success of Australia’s plan to silence the crowd and expressed surprise at the efficiency with which they achieved their target.
“They did exactly what Pat Cummins said they would, they’ve silenced the crowd. They’ve done it in great fashion,” Vaughan asserted.
Nasser Hussain, another former England captain, provided insight into the impact of India’s long tail on the match outcome. He pointed out that India’s inability to have effective all-round options hurt their batting strategy. According to Hussain, the concern is about the lower-order batsmen, particularly Shami at No. 8, restricted the aggression of key players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the middle overs.
“India’s four bowlers not being able to bat that well came back to haunt them. That’s why Rahul and Kohli couldn’t go hard,” Hussain commented on Sky Sports.

]]>Australia’s cricket legend Ricky Ponting, captain of the 2003 World Cup-winning team, expressed his admiration for Travis Head’s exceptional skills, hailing him as one of the world’s premier all-format players. Head’s impressive left-handed batting style, especially during his exhilarating knock of 137 against India, left Ponting impressed. In an interview with Sky Sports, Ponting remarked:
“Travis is emerging as one of the three or four best all-format players in the world.”
Australia’s skipper, Pat Cummins, commended Travis Head’s fearless approach, praising his ability to apply pressure on opponents. In order to win the tournament, Cummins stressed the value of taking chances. Cummins claims that Head, who plays with a smile and puts pressure on the opponent, epitomizes the kind of mentality he looks for in a cricket squad. Cummins expressed his joy for Head’s success, stating,
“He takes the game on, he plays with a smile, he just puts the pressure right back onto the opposition, and he’s just great fun to be around.”
In the most recent ODI match, India posted a score of 240 in 50 overs, with key contributions from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul. Australia’s bowlers, especially Mitchell Starc, proved just how good they are; Cummins and Hazlewood also put on impressive shows. Chasing 241, India initially had the Australians at 47/3, but Travis Head’s outstanding 137 and Marnus Labuschagne’s 58 guided Australia to a convincing six-wicket victory.
With the ODI series concluded, the World Cup finalists are gearing up for a thrilling five-match T20I series, set to kick off in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
